CPWP Professional Education Program

  • To earn the CPWP designation, candidates must complete 7 courses and the capstone module.

  • Each of the 7 courses requires approximately 15 to 20 hours of study time and the capstone module requires 10 hours.

  • Tuition is $150 per course (total program tuition is $1,200). All prices are in Canadian Dollars.

CPWP Designation Courses

  • Course 1: Math of Investments

    This is an introductory course in the mathematics of finance and investments. Topics covered include fundamental math concepts, rates of return, simple interest and compound interest calculations, calculations related to annuities, amortization and sinking funds, as well as introductory concepts related to the valuation of investments.

  • Course 2: The Canadian Financial Services Marketplace and Regulatory Environment

    This course provides a comprehensive overview of the Canadian financial services marketplace including regulations and how trading relates to the economy. Key topics covered include the capital markets, Canadian securities regulation, the Canadian economy and the mechanics of securities transactions.

  • Course 3: Retirement and Estate Planning

    This course focuses on examining various retirement savings strategies and retirement income strategies as well as developing a comprehensive understanding of strategies involved in developing an estate plan. Key topics covered include client lifecycle theory, government and private retirement programs, wills, trusts, powers of attorney and distribution of an estate when a client dies without a will.

  • Course 4: Investment Planning

    This course focuses on the understanding of investor objectives and constrains as well as building proficiency in investment products and the methods available in preparing and evaluating investment portfolios for clients. Major areas covered include investment vehicles (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.), investment analysis approaches and the principles of modern portfolio theory.

  • Course 5: Insurance/Risk Management

    This course focuses on personal risk analysis and insurance planning in the context of personal financial planning. Major areas covered include individual and group life insurance, disability insurance, insurance investment products, underwriting and claims processes, the risk management process and legal and professional standards.

  • Course 6: Personal and Small Business Tax Planning

    This course focuses on the competencies necessary to provide guidance related to Canadian taxation and financial planning issues regarding personal and business decisions involving individuals, corporations and partnerships. Major areas covered include taxation of various types of income and property, the use of tax deferral and tax-free structures, as well as tax issues faced by self-employed individuals.

  • Course 7: Ethical Practices and Professional Conduct

    This course provides candidates with a comprehensive understanding of the requirements related to ethical conduct, standards of conduct, and regulatory obligations. Major areas covered are the code of ethics and professional standards of conduct, dealing with conflicts of interest, the regulators, securities regulations and legislation, obligations for dealing with clients, the Know Your Client (KYC) and suitability obligation, and prohibited sales/trading practices.

  • Course 8: Capstone Module

    The capstone module is a culminating course in which candidates demonstrate their mastery of the key professional competencies addressed in each of the 7 courses of the CPWP professional education program by completing a case study project and a formal final examination.
